Silvassa is not part of Gujarat. It is the main town of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, which joined Daman and Diu in 2020 to form a single union territory, with Daman as its capital. Gujarat borders the district on the north and west and Maharashtra on the south and east, and Vapi, about 18 km away on the Mumbai Ahmedabad highway, is where most people meet the main road and the railway.
The town grew on industry. Tax concessions once drew a large number of factories to the estates at Masat, Khadoli, Naroli, Dadra and Amli, making yarn, textiles, plastics, cables and engineering goods, and workers came from across India. Housing followed quickly: blocks of flats, rows of rented rooms and a few newer towers, with older bungalows and government quarters near the town centre.
The district is also green and hilly, with forest, the Madhuban dam on the Damanganga and a large tribal population in the villages. For a move, that gives two kinds of address. Flats near the estates are easy, while a house in a village on the Khanvel side may sit up a narrow road that only a small vehicle can climb, and the monsoon here is among the wettest on this coast.

Society and building rules
Apartment societies in Silvassa usually want the secretary told in advance, and newer buildings with lifts may fix a shifting time and ask for dues to be cleared. Company colonies at the estates issue a gate pass and inspect the flat before the handover. Many people here rent, and some landlords want the flat inspected and the deposit settled before goods leave, so arrange that a day earlier.

Where the truck can stand
A 14 or 17 ft truck fits easily at the estates and in the newer societies. Amli and the older lanes near the market are tighter, with two-wheelers parked along both sides, so the truck is left on a main road and the crew does the carrying. Villages in the hills towards Khanvel and Dudhni may be reachable only by a smaller vehicle, especially in the monsoon, when roads turn slippery and low crossings flood.

Traffic and timing
Traffic in Silvassa follows the factory shifts, with buses and bikes crowding the estate roads and the Vapi road at shift change, and the town centre at Zanda Chowk busiest in the evening. The road to Vapi is the main link to the highway and is slow at those hours. A local move is best in the late morning. A long load joins the highway at Vapi and is timed to reach the destination city when goods vehicles are allowed in.

Weather and the months to plan around
Dadra and Nagar Haveli gets a very wet monsoon, with heavy rain from mid-June to late September. Village roads flood, streams rise quickly, and everything is packed with plastic under the outer layer. The air stays humid for months afterwards, which is hard on wood and upholstery, and summers are warm and sticky rather than dry. Plan a move for the drier months, October to February, if you can.

Silvassa is in a union territory. Does that change the paperwork for a move to Gujarat or Maharashtra?
Not in any way you will notice. Leaving the territory is handled like any interstate move: an itemised inventory and our invoice go with the goods, and your ID and new address help if the vehicle is stopped for a check. For a company-paid move, the GST invoice is made out in the company's name.
We live in a village towards Khanvel. Can a truck get there in the monsoon?
Sometimes not. Hill roads get slippery and low crossings flood after heavy rain, so we look at the approach first. Often a smaller vehicle does the village stretch and meets the main truck on a better road. In July and August we keep the date flexible and move on a dry day.
Can you move a single rented room for someone working at the estates?
Yes. A bed, a cupboard, some cartons and a bike make a small move, often done within a couple of hours inside Silvassa. For a longer route, we can see if the load might share a truck with other goods bound the same way, which is never certain in advance.
