Shifting homes across Daman and Diu
The union territory joins two former territories that were merged in 2020, and its three towns sit in very different places. Daman is on the coast beside Vapi, split by the Damanganga river into Nani Daman and Moti Daman. Silvassa, the headquarters of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, is inland about 30 km away, among forest and tribal villages, with Vapi between the two. Diu is a small island at the southern end of the Saurashtra peninsula, linked by bridges to the mainland near Una, and some 680 km by road from Daman around the Gulf of Khambhat.
Industry is what brings most people to Daman and Silvassa. Both have large estates of textile, yarn, plastics, pharma and packaging units, many set up when the territory offered tax benefits, and they employ managers and workers from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and beyond. Many work in Vapi and live across the boundary, or the other way round. Moves are frequent and often small: a rented flat or a room near the factory, packed for a transfer to another plant or a job in Mumbai or Surat.
Diu is quieter and lives on tourism, fishing and government. Its old town, fort and churches date from Portuguese rule, which ended in 1961, and the island's population is small, so moves there are fewer and mostly of administration staff, hotel employees and families with roots on the island. Officers of the territory's administration are posted between Daman, Silvassa and Diu, and those transfers are the longest moves inside the union territory.

Homes and buildings
Daman and Silvassa are towns of 3 to 5 storey apartment buildings, many without a lift, along with rooms and chawls near the industrial estates and bungalows for senior staff. Silvassa has grown fast, with new housing societies along the main roads towards Vapi and Naroli. Moti Daman and Diu keep old houses from the Portuguese period, with thick walls, narrow stairs and tiled roofs, as well as government quarters for the administration. Diu's newer houses are mostly one or two storeys, spread along the roads to Ghoghla, Nagoa and Bucharwada.

Between cities
Daman and Silvassa are linked by roads through Vapi, where NH 48 passes between the two, so Surat is about two hours away and Mumbai a morning's drive. Industrial traffic, especially tankers and container trucks around the Vapi estates, is the slow part. Diu is another matter. The road from Daman goes north on NH 48 past Surat to Vadodara, then round the head of the Gulf of Khambhat to Bhavnagar and down the Saurashtra coast through Mahuva and Una. A Ro-Pax ferry between Hazira and Ghogha can cut across the gulf when it is running.

Moving into or out of Daman and Diu
Every road into the territory runs through Gujarat, where liquor is prohibited, and Gujarat police check vehicles coming out of Daman, Silvassa and Diu. No bottles should be packed into a load going in or out, since either way it crosses Gujarat. Past that, the territory follows the national rules: used household goods are personal effects, they go on a packing list with the owner's signed declaration, and e-way bills do not usually come into it. A car staying more than a year must be registered with the territory's transport department against an NOC from its old RTO, and eligible staff can use the BH series.

Weather and the months to plan around
Daman and Silvassa share south Gujarat's weather: a heavy monsoon from mid-June to September and humid, warm months either side. Diu is much drier, with less than half that rain, but it sits on a coast exposed to Arabian Sea cyclones, and Cyclone Tauktae came ashore between Diu and Una in May 2021. Summers in all three towns are hot and sticky, and the sea air is hard on metal fittings and wood. November to February is the most comfortable time for a move anywhere in the territory.

Are Daman, Silvassa and Diu one move or three?
Two kinds. Daman and Silvassa are about 30 km apart through Vapi, so a move between them is a one-day job from packing to unloading. Diu is roughly 680 km from either, a long-distance move with more than a day on the road, and it is quoted that way. An officer transferred from Silvassa to Diu should plan it like a move to another state.
Can I take liquor bought in Daman or Silvassa with my household goods?
No. Whatever the territory's own rules, the truck has to cross Gujarat, which is a dry state, and vehicles leaving Daman, Silvassa and Diu are checked. A bottle found in the truck, sealed or not, lands the driver and the owner of the goods in trouble, so we do not pack them. Finish them or give them away before packing day.
What is involved in moving to Diu?
A long road and a small island. The town's old lanes near the fort and market are narrow, so the truck may stand on a wider road with a short carry or a smaller vehicle for the rest. Many houses are old, with steep stairs. Sea air is strong, so wood and metal are wrapped well, and a date outside the monsoon is easier.
Is the monsoon a problem for moves in Daman and Silvassa?
It slows them. Heavy rain from June to September waterlogs roads around the industrial estates and in low parts of Nani Daman, and loading a truck in a downpour needs cover. Cartons get tape along every edge, and furniture gets a breathable cover under its plastic wrap. If the date is flexible, the dry months are easier.
