Shifting homes in Amravati
Amravati has two older halves and a newer ring. The old city around the Ambadevi and Ekvira Devi temples is closely built, with houses on narrow plots and lanes full of shops. The Camp, laid out in British times, has large bungalows and government houses on wide roads. Around them, colonies of independent houses and more and more apartment buildings spread towards the university, Badnera and the Nagpur road.
As the headquarters of a revenue division, Amravati has a large number of government offices, and transfers are a steady part of life. Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, the engineering and medical colleges and the Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal draw students. The MIDC at Nandgaon Peth has a textile park that is bringing new mills and jobs, and Badnera, a few kilometres south, is the junction on the main Mumbai to Howrah railway line.
That mix means planning by address. Camp bungalows hold heavy furniture and large gardens and take time to pack properly. Old city houses need a smaller vehicle and more carrying. Newer apartment buildings have a lift in some cases and not in others. And Chikhaldara, the hill station in Melghat where forest and tribal welfare staff are posted, needs a smaller truck for its ghat road.

Society and building rules
Amravati's few apartment societies are small and informal. A note to the secretary and a cleared maintenance account cover most of what they ask. Tenants should agree the day with the owner and pay the last light bill. Government houses in Camp, university and college quarters, railway quarters in Badnera and police housing all go back through an estate or administrative office, with an inspection before handover, so book that first.

Where the truck can stand
Camp, the university side and the newer colonies give a 14 or 17 ft truck space at the gate. The old city near Ambadevi and the lanes behind the market take only a tempo, which ferries the goods out to the waiting truck. At Rajkamal and Jaistambh the truck can stop only briefly. For Chikhaldara, a smaller truck climbs the ghat road, since the bends are tight for a long body.

Traffic and timing
Rajkamal Chowk, Irwin Chowk and the Jaistambh area fill up from late morning and stay busy until evening, and the Badnera road slows at train times. Heavy vehicles have restricted hours in town. Navratri is the big festival here, with the Ambadevi and Ekvira Devi temples drawing huge crowds for nine days and the roads around them closed. Ganesh festival brings processions too. Early weekday mornings are easiest.

Weather and the months to plan around
Amravati's summer is severe, with May regularly past 44°C, so work starts early and the crew rests through the worst of the afternoon. The monsoon, late June to September, brings steady rain, and the ghat road to Chikhaldara turns slippery, with the odd landslip. Winter is cool and dry, and Chikhaldara can be cold at night. The months after Diwali are ideal, and April and May are worth avoiding if you can.

Is Badnera part of your Amravati moves?
Yes. Badnera is about 10 km from the Camp and is treated as a move within the city. Railway quarters there are handed back after the section's inspection, so tell us that date and the loading is fixed around it. The Badnera road gets busy at train times, so the drive is planned for a quieter hour.
I have been posted to Chikhaldara. Can you get my household up the ghat?
Yes. Chikhaldara is about 100 km from Amravati, and the last part is a winding ghat road, so a smaller truck is used and the load is tied down tight. In the monsoon the road is slippery and slow, so allow a full day. Forest and government quarters there have their own handover, which the move is fitted around.
We live near Ambadevi temple. Should we avoid Navratri?
Yes. For the nine days of Navratri the lanes around Ambadevi and Ekvira Devi are packed and closed to vehicles, and even the main roads nearby are slow. Pick a date before or after, and start early, since the market lanes near the temple fill by late morning on ordinary days too.
Can you move a Camp bungalow with a lot of old furniture?
Yes. Old teak and sheesham pieces are taken apart where they were made to come apart and wrapped whole where they were not, with blankets and corrugated sheet at the corners. A large bungalow is often packed over two days and loaded on the second. Wooden crates for glass or antiques cost extra and are listed in the quote.
