Nizamabad is a market town first. Its agricultural yard is one of the biggest in the country for turmeric, and the district's paddy and maize pass through it too. The old town sits below the Khilla, the hill fort with the Raghunatha temple inside it, and its streets are close-packed with shops, godowns and family homes. Around it, planned colonies such as Khaleelwadi, Vinayak Nagar, Subhash Nagar and Pragathi Nagar hold most of the city's independent houses and its few apartment blocks.
Many of the newest houses in and around Nizamabad were built with money earned in the Gulf. Families from Armoor, Balkonda and the villages nearby have sent men to Dubai, Muscat and Saudi Arabia for decades, and the homes built back here are large, with marble floors, heavy furniture and a first floor let out or kept for the next generation. Those are big moves for a small city. The old town's homes are the awkward ones, with narrow doors, steep stairs and no room outside.
Outside farming and trade, work comes from the district offices, the government medical college, Telangana University at Dichpally, the banks and the beedi trade, which still employs a great many women at home. Railway staff are posted to the junction on the Secunderabad to Manmad line. When people leave, the bulk go to Hyderabad, a few hours south on the national highway, and a steady number cross into Maharashtra, with Nanded the nearest city over the border.

Khaleelwadi to Pragathi Nagar is 4 or 5 km and the old town to the Armoor Road colonies about 7 km, so a 2 BHK leaves in the morning and is unpacked by evening. The trouble spots are the old town lanes around the Khilla and Gandhi Chowk, where two-wheelers and handcarts fill the road all day, and the streets near the market yard in season. There a tempo does the running, and the truck waits wherever the street finally widens. Some layouts at the edge of town are still on kutcha roads, which the black soil turns to paste after rain.

Traffic and timing
Morning traffic is heaviest near the bus stand, the Khaleelwadi hospitals and the railway station, and the market streets stay busy until late evening. In the turmeric season the yard and the roads leading to it are crowded from early morning. Ganesh immersions and Dasara close central roads for an evening, and during Ramzan the old town's markets stay open past midnight. A weekday morning outside those weeks is the simplest time to move.

We are leaving a large Gulf-built house near Armoor. Can you pack marble tables and chandeliers?
Yes. Marble tops come off their frames and travel on edge in wooden crates, which cost extra, and chandeliers are taken down with every glass piece wrapped and boxed. Large wardrobes and beds are opened up. A house like that often fills a 17 ft truck or more, so we look at every room at the survey before quoting.
Is the turmeric season a bad time to move near the market yard?
It can be. From about February to April the yard and the roads around it fill with tractors and lorries early in the day, and a truck can wait a long time to get through. If your house is close by, we load at first light or on a day the yard is shut, and keep the main truck on a road that stays open.
Do you do moves across the border to Nanded?
