Shifting homes across Telangana
Most of Telangana's house moves start or end in Hyderabad. The city's west, from HITEC City and Gachibowli to Kondapur, Nanakramguda and Kokapet, is the IT and finance belt, and it has pulled new housing out along the Outer Ring Road. Pharma units cluster around Jeedimetla, Patancheru and Genome Valley, while defence research labs, BHEL and the Secunderabad cantonment employ thousands more. Around Charminar, on the southern bank of the Musi, the old city is a different place again, dense and commercial.
Beyond the capital, the state is Deccan plateau: granite hills, lakes and farmland. Warangal, the second city, has NIT Warangal and Kakatiya University. Karimnagar has granite quarries, and nearby Ramagundam has NTPC and the Singareni coal mines, whose colonies stretch east to Kothagudem and Manuguru. Nizamabad trades turmeric, Khammam has granite and sits near the Kothagudem coal belt, and Mahbubnagar, about 100 km south, is filling up with Hyderabad's overflow and the factories at Jadcherla.
People arrive for IT and pharma jobs from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and the north, and from the district towns for work and college. Singareni, NTPC, the railways and the state government transfer staff between district towns, and the South Central Railway headquarters at Secunderabad posts officers in and out. People leaving Telangana usually head for Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai or the NCR, and many families keep close ties with home towns in Andhra Pradesh.

Before you move in Telangana

Homes and buildings
Hyderabad builds tall. Gated communities with towers of 30 storeys and more line the Financial District, Kokapet, Narsingi and Tellapur, and older apartment blocks fill Kukatpally, Ameerpet and Dilsukhnagar. Independent houses of two or three floors, often with a rented portion upstairs, are everywhere else. Secunderabad has cantonment bungalows and railway quarters around Rail Nilayam, and Singareni, NTPC and BHEL run their own townships. In the district towns, homes are independent houses with flat concrete roofs, usually on a lane a small truck can manage.

Between cities
The Outer Ring Road circles Hyderabad for about 158 km and is the quickest way between the west side and the highways out. NH 44 runs north past Kamareddy and Nirmal to Adilabad and south through Mahbubnagar towards Kurnool. NH 65 heads east through Suryapet towards Vijayawada, NH 163 goes north-east to Warangal, and the Rajiv Rahadari links Hyderabad with Karimnagar and Ramagundam. The terrain is flat to rolling, so the slow parts are inside the city: the old city lanes, the IT corridor at office hours and the approaches to the ORR.

Moving into or out of Telangana
No special permit is needed to bring household goods into Telangana. Used personal belongings are not goods for sale, so an itemised list and a signed self-declaration go with the load, and the usual case needs no e-way bill. A car that stays past a year needs Telangana registration, now issued with TG plates, and the process starts with an NOC from the RTO where the car was first registered. The BH series is an option for defence, government and PSU staff and for employees of companies with offices in four or more states.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer is the hard season. From April to early June Hyderabad reaches 40 to 44°C, and the north around Ramagundam and Adilabad gets hotter, so loading is best finished before midday. The monsoon runs from June to September and brings short, heavy downpours that flood Hyderabad's low roads and underpasses within an hour. Bonalu in July and August and the Ganesh processions to Hussain Sagar close roads in the city, and Bathukamma and Dasara in September or October send many families home to the districts. November to February is dry and pleasant.

What does a gated community in the IT corridor need before a move?
A written request to the facility office a few days ahead, cleared maintenance dues, and for tenants a note of approval from the owner. The office then books the service lift and gives a shifting slot, usually in daytime hours, and some hold a refundable sum until they have checked the lobby and lift for damage. The gate will also want the crew list and the vehicle number a day ahead.
Will Ganesh immersion day affect my move in Hyderabad?
Yes. On the main immersion day processions head to Hussain Sagar from across the city, and roads around Tank Bund, Khairatabad and much of central Hyderabad close or crawl for well over a day. Pick a date clear of it, and clear of the Bonalu Sundays if you live in the old city or Secunderabad.
We are moving into a Singareni or NTPC township. Is there paperwork?
Some. The township gate usually wants the allotment letter, the names of the crew and the truck number before it lets a vehicle in, and the estate or town office does the quarter handover with you. Ask your department for its checklist early, and when the employer foots the bill, both the quote and the GST invoice are made out to it.
My car has Andhra Pradesh plates. Do I need to change them after moving to Hyderabad?
If the move is permanent and the car will stay in Telangana beyond 12 months, yes. Get an NOC from the Andhra Pradesh RTO, then apply for Telangana registration and pay the road tax here. If you are a central government, defence or PSU employee, or your employer has offices in four or more states, check whether a BH series plate suits you better.
