Shifting homes across Gujarat
Gujarat's people and work are spread along a few clear lines. Central Gujarat runs from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar down through Anand and Kheda to Vadodara. South Gujarat is the industrial strip along NH 48 from Bharuch and Ankleshwar through Surat to Valsad and Vapi. Saurashtra is the peninsula, with Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Junagadh, and Kutch lies apart in the north-west, with Bhuj, Gandhidham and the ports at Mundra and Kandla. North Gujarat, around Mehsana, Palanpur and Himatnagar, is dairy and farm country with a growing band of factories.
A move within Ahmedabad or Surat is a city job, decided by the society office, the lift and the traffic. Between cities the distances add up quickly. Surat to Rajkot is a full day's drive, and Bhuj is more than 300 km from Ahmedabad. Saurashtra and Kutch towns have more independent houses and fewer lifts, and their summer heat is harder on a crew. Company townships at Jamnagar, Dahej and Hazira have their own gate rules, which the employer's admin team explains before the truck is booked.
Industry brings most newcomers. Diamond polishing and textiles employ lakhs in Surat, many of them from Saurashtra and a large number from Odisha. Chemical and pharma units fill the estates at Ankleshwar, Vapi and Dahej, and Reliance and Nayara run refineries near Jamnagar. Car plants at Sanand, Halol and near Becharaji have added whole new colonies, and GIFT City in Gandhinagar has brought bank and finance staff. People leave for Mumbai, Bengaluru and the Gulf, and many Gujarati families move back and forth between Mumbai and their home towns in Saurashtra.

Homes and buildings
Ahmedabad's walled city is a maze of pols, gated lanes of old timber-framed houses where no truck can enter. Around it spread bungalow societies and rows of tenements, and to the west the high-rises of SG Highway, Bopal, Shela and Gota. Surat has gone vertical in the last two decades, with towers of 15 to 25 storeys in Vesu, Adajan and Pal. Gandhinagar is laid out in numbered sectors of government quarters and newer apartments. In Saurashtra and Kutch most homes are one or two storey independent houses, and much of Kutch was rebuilt after the 2001 earthquake.

Between cities
NH 48 is the spine, running from Vapi through Surat, Bharuch and Vadodara to Ahmedabad and on towards Rajasthan, and the expressway between Ahmedabad and Vadodara takes some of its load. Parts of the new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway through the state are already open. From Ahmedabad, the highway west through Bagodara, Limbdi and Chotila reaches Rajkot, and Kutch is entered over the Surajbari bridge near the Little Rann. The land is flat and ghats are rare, so the slow points are towns and bridges: the NH 48 stretch around Bharuch and the approaches to Surat can jam for hours.

Moving into or out of Gujarat
Gujarat has prohibition, so a household load coming into the state must carry no liquor at all, and vehicles entering from Maharashtra, Rajasthan and the union territory next door are checked for it. Otherwise Gujarat follows national practice. Your own used furniture and belongings are not trade goods, so they travel with an itemised inventory and your signed declaration, and no e-way bill is asked for in the normal course. A car staying in Gujarat for longer than a year has to be registered here afresh, with a no objection certificate from its original RTO, unless it already carries a BH series plate.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer is long and fierce. Ahmedabad crosses 45°C in May, and Kutch and north Gujarat are just as hot. The monsoon reaches the south in mid-June and is heaviest from Valsad to Surat, where the Tapi and the city's low-lying parts can flood. Saurashtra and Kutch get far less rain, but cyclones from the Arabian Sea strike the coast between Porbandar and Kutch in May and June and again around October. Navratri keeps cities busy late into the night, and many businesses shut for several days over Diwali. December to February is the most comfortable time to move.

Can I bring liquor into Gujarat with my household goods?
No. Gujarat is a dry state, and bottles found in a household load cause trouble for the driver and for the owner of the goods, wherever they were bought. That includes gifts and sealed bottles from Daman, Goa or duty free. Give them away or finish them before packing day, because we do not pack liquor into any load bound for Gujarat.
How is a move out of a pol in old Ahmedabad handled?
A pol is a gated lane of attached houses, often with steep wooden stairs and doorways too narrow for a wardrobe. The truck is parked where the pol meets a main road, and everything is carried out by hand or wheeled out on a handcart. Big pieces are taken apart inside the house. At the survey we check the stairs, the lane and how far the carry to the truck will be.
Does the Diwali break affect moving dates in Gujarat?
It can. Gujarat takes a longer Diwali holiday than most states. Shops, offices and many factories close around Diwali and the Gujarati new year and reopen on Labh Pancham, the fifth day of the new year. If your move depends on a landlord, a society office or an employer's admin team, finish the paperwork before the break. The week after Labh Pancham is busy with families returning.
What should I know about moving to Kutch?
That it is far from everything else in the state. Gandhidham is about 300 km from Ahmedabad and Bhuj a little more, and the road crosses the Surajbari bridge, where port traffic can queue. Kutch summers are fierce and dusty, which means sealing electronics carefully and starting the loading at first light. Port and company colonies at Mundra and Gandhidham ask for gate passes, which the employer usually arranges.
