Shifting homes in Mundra
Mundra was a small coastal town of traders and salt pans until the port arrived. The Adani port is now one of the busiest cargo ports in India, and around it are an SEZ, the Adani and Tata power plants, an edible oil refinery and solar manufacturing. The old town still has its bazaar and tight streets, while staff housing, townships and new societies have spread along the roads to Baroi and the port.
Most people who move here are on postings: port and marine staff, power plant engineers, logistics managers and the contractors who work for them. Many live in company townships, with furnished quarters and their own entry rules, while others rent flats in the town or in Baroi. Society and building rules
In a company township the estate office runs everything: it issues the vehicle pass, inspects the quarters, checks the furniture that belongs to the flat, and signs the handover. Book that inspection before moving day. Societies in Baroi and the town want notice and a daytime window, and tenants need a landlord's letter. Independent houses in the old town need nothing more than a word with the neighbours.

Where the truck can stand
Inside the port, SEZ and township gates the roads are wide, but trucks must follow set routes and some gates allow only certain vehicle sizes. The old town's streets are narrow, so a smaller vehicle covers the final part. Baroi and the newer areas have space at the gate. Port traffic uses the main roads all day, so the truck does not stand on them.

Traffic and timing
The port works around the clock, and container trucks fill the roads to it at every hour, with the heaviest traffic around shift changes at the port and the power plants. Gate entry for a household truck may be limited to daylight hours. The town bazaar is busy from late morning. In summer we load early, and a load leaving Mundra for Ahmedabad or Mumbai usually starts in the morning to cross Kutch in daylight.

Weather and the months to plan around
Mundra is hot, dry and windy for most of the year, with summer afternoons near 40°C and salty dust in the air. Rainfall is low, but this coast is exposed to Arabian Sea cyclones, and Biparjoy in June 2023 shut the port for days. The salt air rusts metal and gets into electronics, so both are wrapped with a moisture barrier. A move is most comfortable between November and February.

My township quarters are furnished. Do I still need a full truck?
