Bhavnagar was a princely capital on the Gulf of Khambhat, and it still has two faces. The old city around Vora Bazaar, Khargate and Haluria Chowk is a warren of narrow lanes and tall old houses. Outside it, the planned areas along Waghawadi Road, Vidyanagar, Kaliyabid and Hill Drive are bungalows, tenements and apartment blocks on broad roads, most of them only a few storeys high.
The city's work is varied. Diamond polishing units are spread across it, the ship-breaking yards at Alang lie about 50 km away, and steel re-rolling mills, plastics units and salt works surround the town. The university, the medical college and CSMCRI, a national institute for salt and marine chemicals research, bring academic staff, and the ferry from Ghogha links Bhavnagar to Hazira across the gulf.
Many Bhavnagar families have relatives in Surat, and moves between the two cities run in both directions. Houses here tend to be full, with generations of furniture, brass and steel utensils, and a terrace or loft of stored things. Society and building rules
Most Bhavnagar homes are bungalows and tenements where the only formality is telling the neighbours. Apartment societies on Waghawadi Road and in Kaliyabid expect the secretary to be told in writing and prefer moves in daylight. Those with lifts may want the maintenance account settled first. Staff housing at the port, the university or CSMCRI has its own handover process, and we plan the loading around the date it gives you.

Where the truck can stand
Outside the old city, a 14 or 17 ft truck reaches most Bhavnagar gates without trouble. Inside it, the lanes around Vora Bazaar and Khargate are narrow, crowded with two-wheelers and lined with shopfronts, so the truck stands at the nearest wide road and the goods come out by handcart or on shoulders. In Kaliyabid and the older societies, parked cars can leave one lane open, and we send a smaller vehicle when the survey shows it.

Traffic and timing
The old city markets are busy from mid-morning until late evening, so a move there starts early. Elsewhere traffic is moderate, heavier near Ghogha Circle, Nilambag and the station at office hours, and heavy vehicles are kept off the central roads for much of the day. The busiest weeks for moving are around Diwali, when diamond workers travel between Bhavnagar and Surat, so book early for those dates.

Bhavnagar's summers are hot, around 40°C in May, and near the coast the air is humid through the monsoon and after it. Rain from late June to September is moderate but can come in heavy spells, and Arabian Sea cyclones sometimes bring a few days of wind and rain in May, June or October. Salt in the air is hard on metal and electronics, so both are packed with a moisture barrier. The cooler months, November to February, are the pleasantest for a move.

Is it possible to shift a family house in the lanes near Vora Bazaar?
Yes. Those lanes take a handcart at most, so the truck parks at the closest broad road and the goods come out on the handcart or by hand, with extra people for a long carry. Heavy pieces are dismantled upstairs. We start before the shops open, after seeing the house in person or on video.
My son is moving to Surat for work. Can you move a single room?
Yes. A few cartons, a bed and a bike count as a small move on our rate card, and the bike travels on a carrier. We can also check whether the load could share a truck to Surat as a part load. That is cheaper when it works out, and depends on what is running that week.
