Shifting homes in Jalgaon
Jalgaon is a Khandesh city of bungalows and row houses. Colonies such as Ramanand Nagar, Pimprala and those around Mehrun lake are streets of independent houses, each with a compound, a terrace and a store room, and apartment buildings of four or five storeys are spreading along the main roads. The old commercial core, around Navi Peth and the Sarafa bazaar that the city's gold trade is known for, is packed close with shops and homes on narrow lanes.
A bungalow move here is a large one. Houses hold solid wooden cots and dining sets, steel cupboards, grain drums and years of things in the store room, and a full household can fill a 17 ft truck even for a short hop across town. Society and building rules
Few Jalgaon homes come with society rules. Bungalows and row houses have none, though a word with the neighbours helps if the truck will block the road for a few hours. Apartment buildings usually have a secretary who wants to know the date, and some ask for dues to be settled. Railway quarters at Bhusawal and government housing in the city are handed over on a date the department sets, and the move is built around it. Tenants should tell the landlord in writing.

Where the truck can stand
The colonies have wide roads and the truck can usually stand at the gate. In Navi Peth, the Sarafa bazaar and the older lanes it cannot, so the goods go by tempo to the truck waiting on the nearest open road. New layouts at the edges sometimes have unpaved roads that turn to sticky black mud in the rains. The highway through the city is busy with trucks and buses, and loading beside it is done carefully and quickly.

Traffic and timing
The bazaar fills from late morning, and the market streets are crowded through the wedding season and around Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Diwali, when the gold shops are at their busiest. The highway and the main junctions are slowest in the evening. In April and May we start at 6 am and aim to finish the heavy carrying before noon, because the afternoon heat is severe.

Jalgaon has some of the hottest summers in Maharashtra, with May afternoons often above 45°C and a hot wind blowing. We start at dawn, keep televisions and electronics out of the sun and do not leave a loaded truck standing through the afternoon. Rain between June and September is moderate by Maharashtra standards, and the black soil makes unpaved roads sticky. Winter is dry and cool, and those months are by far the gentlest for a move.
