Shirdi has grown around the Sai Baba Samadhi Mandir from a village into a town of lodges, hotels, shops and staff housing. The streets near the temple are lined with prasad and flower stalls and with lodges several storeys high, rooms stacked above shops. Further out, along the Nagar Manmad road and Pimpalwadi Road, are bigger hotels, and beyond them new colonies of houses and small apartment buildings towards Rahata.
Most people here work for the temple or its visitors. The Sai Baba Sansthan runs the temple, its hospitals, its prasadalaya and large pilgrim accommodation, and employs a big staff. Hotels, restaurants, shops and travel agents employ many more. A lot of workers come from other districts and states, rent a room or a small flat, and move within Shirdi or leave after a few years, so many moves here are small loads.
The other kind of move is a business or family house, often in Rahata or Kopargaon, with a full household and sometimes stock from a shop. The airport at Kakadi and the railway station have made the town easier to reach and brought some new residents. Around the Samadhi Mandir
Lodges, shops and houses close to the temple, where vehicles are restricted and the lanes are packed with pilgrims. Loading happens at dawn with a small vehicle.
Nagar Manmad Road
The main road through town, lined with hotels and shops and busy with buses and pilgrim cars all day. A truck stands here only briefly.
Pimpalwadi Road
Hotels, lodges and staff rooms. Parking is easier than near the temple, though guest arrivals decide when a truck can stand at a hotel entrance.
Rahata
The taluka town next door, with houses, shops and a few apartment buildings. Roads are easier and a full-size truck usually reaches the gate.
Kopargaon
A larger town on the Godavari with factories, colleges and settled neighbourhoods. The older centre has narrow roads, the newer colonies have room.

Society and building rules
Lodges and hotels make their own rules, and usually want a move done early, before guests check in. Anyone in staff housing should check the vacating process and date with their employer, since the quarters are handed back through its office. The newer apartment buildings are small, and their secretaries ask for the date and sometimes for dues to be cleared. In a rented room, talk to the owner a few days ahead about the deposit and when to hand back the keys.

Where the truck can stand
Near the temple, vehicles are restricted and pilgrims fill the lanes soon after the dawn aarti, so the lorry stops short on an open stretch and a small vehicle, or the crew on foot, ferries the goods, ideally at first light. On the Nagar Manmad road the truck can stand briefly outside a building. Rahata, Kopargaon and the newer colonies are much easier, and a big truck can usually back up to the gate.

Traffic and timing
Thursdays are the busiest day of the week, with extra pilgrims and the evening palkhi procession around the temple, and weekends and public holidays are nearly as crowded. The three big festivals, Ram Navami, Guru Purnima and Vijayadashami, bring huge crowds for several days, and the area around the temple is closed to vehicles. Christmas and New Year are packed too. A weekday other than Thursday, starting early, is best.

Weather and the months to plan around
Shirdi is hot and dry for much of the year. April and May go above 40°C, which means an early start and a long pause in the middle of the afternoon. The monsoon is modest and rarely stops a move, though the unpaved roads to newer plots turn muddy. Winters are cool and dry, and the best months are November to February, if you keep clear of the holiday crowds at the end of December.

I work at a hotel and only have a room of things. Is that worth booking?
Yes. A bed, a cupboard, cartons and a bike make a small job, usually a small vehicle and a couple of people, and within Shirdi it takes a morning. For a move back home to another state, a shared truck is cheaper if one happens to be going your way, and we can ask, though it cannot be promised.
