Berhampur, officially Brahmapur, is the trading city of south Odisha. Its old core around Bada Bazar and Gate Bazar is a tangle of sari, silk and gold shops with family homes above, and the Berhampuri silk sari is still woven and sold here. Around it, older neighbourhoods such as Gosaninuagaon and Gandhi Nagar are streets of two and three storey houses, and newer colonies and apartment blocks have spread along the Aska Road and towards Ankuli. Telugu is widely spoken, with the Andhra border less than an hour south.
Independent houses are the rule, often shared by an extended family and full of heavy wooden and steel furniture, so the survey counts every almirah. In the old market lanes a truck cannot come close, and goods are carried or shuttled out before the shops open. Newer homes have a gate and room for a truck. Near the coast at Gopalpur, salt air means steel and electronics get extra wrapping.
MKCG Medical College and Berhampur University at Bhanja Bihar fill the town with doctors, teachers and students, while the Army Air Defence College at Gopalpur brings officers on posting. Apartment blocks in Ankuli and on the Aska Road want notice and dues cleared. At Gopalpur, army quarters follow the college's own process, with the vehicle and crew cleared at the gate. University and hospital quarters are inspected before the keys go back, and loading is done on the eve of that visit.

Where the truck can stand
Newer colonies and the main roads leave room for a 17 ft truck. The old market and parts of Gosaninuagaon are too tight, and a small vehicle makes trips to the waiting truck. Around MKCG, parked vehicles narrow the road all day. Gopalpur's cantonment roads are wide, but entry needs clearance. On NH 16 at the edge of the city, the truck pulls onto a service road to load.

Traffic and timing
The Thakurani Yatra, held every second year in spring, is Berhampur's biggest festival, with processions and crowds in the old town for weeks, and a move near the centre avoids it. Danda Nacha in the month of Chaitra, Durga Puja and Dussehra also bring crowds. Traffic is heaviest around Gate Bazar, the market and the MKCG road in the late morning. Loading goes best early on a weekday.

The air in Berhampur is damp all year, and the hot months are April to June, with afternoons near 38°C. Rain from June to September is moderate, with the odd spell of several very wet days. Cyclones are the season to watch: Phailin came ashore at Gopalpur in 2013, and Titli struck the district in 2018. In May and from October to December, a warning means the move is put off until roads reopen and power returns. The best time is December to February.

Is it a good idea to move during the Thakurani Yatra?
Not in the old town. For the weeks of the yatra the streets along the goddess's route are packed, decorated and in places closed to vehicles, and a truck cannot get through. A move in Ankuli or on the Aska Road can go ahead with an early start. The yatra comes every second year, so check the dates before you fix one.
We are moving to Surat to join family. How long will it take?
Surat is roughly 1,550 km west, a long run through Raipur and Nagpur, and the load normally takes five or six days. The truck gets a consignment number you can follow. Surat societies often have their own moving rules, so send us the address. For a small household, space on a truck already heading west is worth asking about, though it is never promised.
I am posted to the Army Air Defence College at Gopalpur. Can you handle the move?
