Sambalpur grew on the Mahanadi around the Samaleswari temple, and its old neighbourhoods, Modipara, Golebazar and the lanes near the temple, are closely built houses of two and three storeys. The newer town spreads along the highways, with Ainthapali, Budharaja and Dhanupali full of independent houses, offices and apartment blocks. Upstream, Burla and Hirakud are townships of their own: Burla of universities and hospitals, Hirakud of the dam and Hindalco's smelter.
Much of Sambalpur lives in independent houses, often with a courtyard and a store room holding years of grain tins, brass and handloom saris, and packing takes longer than loading. In the old town, lanes near the temple and the market are narrow and a truck stays on the main road. Most homes are independent, so the owner is the one to settle rent, electricity and keys with. The apartment blocks in Ainthapali and on the highway ask for notice and daytime moves. Campus quarters at the university, VSSUT and VIMSAR, MCL's township at Burla and Hindalco's at Hirakud each return through their own estate offices after an inspection, and some want the truck cleared at the gate. Railway quarters follow the division's process.

Where the truck can stand
Burla, Hirakud and the newer parts of town are easy for a 17 ft truck. The old town around Golebazar and the temple is tight, with lanes where only a pickup fits and shops that spill onto the road. The highways through Sambalpur carry heavy truck traffic, and a truck loading beside them stays on the shoulder or a side road. Campus and company colonies are gated, so vehicle details go ahead.

Traffic and timing
Sital Sasthi, the festival of Shiva's wedding in early summer, brings processions and crowds through the old town for several days, and roads close along the route. Nuakhai in August or September sees families travel home and markets overflow. Durga Puja and Kali Puja fill the town in autumn. Otherwise, Ainthapali and Golebazar are busy from late morning, and an early weekday start is best.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer hits Sambalpur hard. May afternoons can pass 44°C, and moves start at dawn. Rain is heavy from mid June into September, and when rain in the catchment fills Hirakud and the gates open, the Mahanadi runs high past the town for weeks. Cyclones reach here only as heavy rain. Cool, dry days from November to February make that the season for moving.

If you live in the old town, yes. The procession and the celebrations run over several days, the route is decorated and crowded, and vehicles are held back from it. Moves in Ainthapali, Burla or Hirakud can go ahead, though traffic across town is slower. Give us your preferred date and we will check it against the festival.
