The sea air is the first thing to plan for. Chakratirtha Road and Penthakata

Homes in Puri tend to be independent houses or small buildings, and the owner is the person to agree dates and the last month's rent with. Hotels and guest houses want a move done between check-outs, early in the morning or in the quieter months. The few apartment blocks in Baliapanda ask for notice. Mathas and temple-linked properties have managers who may need to approve furniture leaving, and government quarters go back through their offices after an inspection.

Where the truck can stand
On VIP Road, Station Road, Baliapanda and the Bhubaneswar road, a 14 or 17 ft truck stands at the gate. The sahis around the temple and along Bada Danda take no truck, and traffic near the shrine is restricted, so the crew carries the goods or a small vehicle shuttles them to the open road. Lanes near the sea are sandy and soft, which a loaded truck avoids. On big festival days, vehicles are stopped at the edge of town.

Traffic and timing
The Rath Yatra, in June or July, closes Bada Danda and much of the town, with Snana Purnima before it and the Bahuda return nine days later. Puri fills again in the month of Kartik, around the new year and on long weekends, when the beach road and the approach from Bhubaneswar are slow. For a move, a weekday morning outside those periods works best, and the temple area is off limits on any festival day.

Weather and the months to plan around
Puri is humid all year, and the salt air never lets up. April to June is hot and sticky, with afternoons around 35 to 38°C. Heavy monsoon rain falls from June into September. The real risk is cyclones, in May and June and again from October to December, and Fani came ashore near Puri in May 2019. When a warning is issued the district restricts movement, and no move should go ahead. December to February is the calmest time.
