Ulhasnagar was set up after Partition, when Sindhi families who had left their homes were settled in the old army barracks of the Kalyan camp. The town is still divided into five camps, and some of the barrack blocks survive, long single-storey rows now split into homes and shops. Most of the town, though, is three to five storey buildings put up close together over the decades since, with shops below and flats above, on one of the densest patches of land in the state.
That density decides a move. Staircases are narrow, lifts are small where they exist, and many buildings open straight onto a market street. Some older buildings have been found unsafe, and the municipal corporation lists them before each monsoon, which can mean a family has to move out quickly. The newer societies on the edges, towards Shahad and Ambernath, are easier, with lifts and room at the gate.
Trade is what the town lives on: garments and jeans, furniture, electronics and the wholesale markets that draw buyers from across the region. The Century Rayon plant at Shahad and the industries of Ambernath and Kalyan employ more. Families here have relatives in Sindhi communities across India and abroad, and moves out often follow them, to Mumbai, Ahmedabad and beyond, as well as to the bigger flats of Thane and Kalyan.

The station and market streets
Streets of garment, furniture and electronics shops, packed from late morning to night. A truck cannot stop here in trading hours, so we load at dawn.
The old barrack blocks

Society and building rules
Many older buildings have small or informal societies, and some have none, so the landlord or the building's senior resident is who to tell. Clear any dues the committee asks about and give the date in writing. Newer societies at the edges want a letter, the truck details, a lift booking and sometimes a deposit. If your building has been served a notice to vacate, have it with you when we talk, since it fixes the date everything is planned around.

Where the truck can stand
Trucks cannot stand on the market streets once the shops open, and many residential lanes are too narrow even for a 14 ft truck. The big truck is parked on the Kalyan-Ambernath road or a similar wide stretch, and a tempo does the trips to your door. The barrack rows need a hand carry to the end of the passage. Around Shahad and on the Ambernath side there is usually room at the gate.

Traffic and timing
The markets open late morning and stay busy into the night, so the easiest time to load is from 6 or 7 am. The roads around Shahad, the road to Kalyan and the station approaches jam at office hours. Chetichand, the Sindhi New Year, brings processions through the camps, and the weeks before Diwali fill every market street, so moves near the markets are best kept away from both.

Weather and the months to plan around
Heavy rain from June to September swells the Waldhuni river, which runs through the town, and it quickly floods the low streets along its banks. The lanes drain slowly, and goods are carried in the open for longer than in most towns, so everything is wrapped against water. The air stays humid for months, and April and May push towards 40°C. Moves go most easily in the drier, cooler months of November to February.
