Shillong's own stretch begins at Jorabat, on the eastern edge of Guwahati, after the same long haul across central India and through the Siliguri corridor into Assam. At Jorabat the highway leaves the Assam plains and enters Meghalaya near Byrnihat. It climbs past Nongpoh, roughly halfway, and runs above the Umiam reservoir at Barapani before coming into Shillong from the north. It is a major highway, busy with trucks and shared taxis, and it bends and climbs almost the whole way. Loaded trucks crawl on the gradients, and in the rains landslides and fog can slow or stop traffic.

Sohra and Mawsynram, in the same district as Shillong, are among the rainiest places on earth, and Shillong itself has long spells of rain and cloud from May to September. That is when landslides on the hill road are most likely. December to February is dry and clear, but nights are cold and in December the sun sets before five, so a winter delivery is planned to start early.

The junctions around Police Bazar and Laitumkhrah jam through much of the day, so we aim to bring the truck in early. We arrive in December. What should we plan for the cold?
Keep a carton of blankets, warm clothes and a heater separate and marked, so we can take it off the truck first. December and January nights in Shillong are cold, and in December the sun goes down before five, so we aim to finish the unloading in daylight. Winter is dry, which makes the hill road from Guwahati more predictable than in the rains.
