The road from Pune to Kochi
Leaving Pune on NH48, the load stays on it through Kolhapur to Belagavi, then comes down the Western Ghats into Goa and turns south on NH66, the coastal highway. From Goa it runs past Karwar and down the Karnataka coast to Mangaluru, crosses into Kerala north of Kasaragod and carries on through Kannur and Kozhikode, crossing river after river on the way. It meets Kochi at Edappally, coming in from the north. Along much of the Kerala stretch the towns run into one another and the going is slow. The alternative is inland, by Bengaluru, Salem and the Palakkad gap.
Weather and timing on this route
NH66 runs through some of the heaviest monsoon rain in India from June to September, from Goa down the Karnataka coast and into Kerala. The monsoon reaches Kerala first, usually around the start of June, and Kochi gets heavy rain in long spells until September, with a second, lighter season in October and November. In August 2018 the Periyar flooded Aluva, north of the city, and the airport closed for a fortnight. Humidity stays high in every month, the dry season included.
Delivery in Kochi
For an address inside the naval base or the port area on Willingdon Island, the gate needs the truck and crew details beforehand. Fort Kochi and Mattancherry have lanes that fit only a small vehicle, so the load changes trucks before the old quarter, and on Vypeen the village roads narrow off the main road beyond the Goshree bridges. I am posted from INS Shivaji at Lonavala to Kochi. Can you pack at Lonavala?
Yes. Lonavala is on the Pune side of the ghat, and the survey and packing are done there as they would be in Pune. Both the station and the naval base in Kochi control entry, so we can send each gate the lorry's plate number and our crew list ahead of moving day. For the claim, keep the written quote, the loading inventory with your signature and our GST bill. A car can travel down separately on a carrier.
Is June a bad month to arrive in Kochi?
It is the start of the heaviest rain, since the monsoon breaks over Kerala around then, and a hard spell can flood streets in parts of the city for a few hours. The move can still go ahead, with the goods sealed for rain, unloading paused in downpours and some spare time kept in the plan. If your dates are free, January to March is the dry season.
Our new home is on Vypeen. Does that change the delivery?
A little. Vypeen is joined to Ernakulam by the Goshree bridges, and the truck crosses them onto the island's main road, which is good. The lanes into the villages are narrow, so the last part may be done in a smaller vehicle. Send us the exact location and a photo of the lane.
How do we keep mould off the furniture once we are in Kochi?
Take off the plastic wrapping within a day or so of delivery, since it holds in damp, and let wood and upholstery air with the fans on. Keep sofas and mattresses a little away from outer walls in the monsoon, and put silica gel or a dehumidifier in cupboards that hold leather, books or camera gear. Wipe down polished wood now and then through the wet months.
