The road from Pune to Kota
The long first leg, by Dhule and Indore, is common to all the Malwa routes. From Indore the road heads north across the plateau and into Rajasthan near Jhalawar. Beyond Jhalawar it runs through the Mukundra hills, a low forested range that is now a tiger reserve, and comes down to Kota's southern side. A hostel in Kunhari or Landmark City means one more crossing, over the Chambal inside the city, and the coaching areas at class change times can be slower than anything on the highway.

New students arrive in the hottest weeks of the year, when dry winds cross Malwa and Hadoti in the afternoons and Kota itself is among the hottest places in Rajasthan. From July to September the monsoon here is wetter than in western Rajasthan, and the Chambal rises when the dams upstream let water out. In October the Dussehra fair crowds the city for weeks.
