Society and building rules
Many Rajkot societies are bungalow and tenement colonies with a president and a secretary, and the courtesy is a word with them and the neighbours before the truck arrives. Apartment towers on the Ring Road and Kalawad Road are stricter: a written request, a daylight shifting time, sometimes a deposit for the lift, and the maintenance cleared before the gate lets anything out. Tenants should keep the owner's consent in writing.

Where the truck can stand
Newer Rajkot is laid out for vehicles, and most societies in the west and south take a 17 ft truck at the door. The pinch points are the old city, where the lanes around Soni Bazaar and Dharmendra Road are too narrow and too crowded, and the older societies off University Road and Raiya Road, where parked cars leave a single lane. In those spots the big truck parks out on the main road, leaving a tempo to cover the final few hundred metres.

Traffic and timing
Mornings are the best time to move in Rajkot. Traffic peaks at Indira Circle, KKV Chowk, Raiya Chowkdi and the Gondal Road junctions, and large trucks face restrictions on the central roads through most of the day. The Janmashtami Lok Melo at Race Course draws huge crowds for several days in August or September and closes the roads around it, and Navratri nights are busy near the garba venues.

Weather and the months to plan around
Rajkot's climate is hot and dry. April and May are the hard months, with afternoons at 42 to 44°C and dusty winds, so our crew begins at first light. Monsoon rain is moderate but comes in heavy bursts, when the Aji river and the low roads near it fill for a while. Winters are dry and comfortable, and November to February is when moving here is easiest. Diwali is a long holiday here, and many businesses shut for close to a week.

Can you move a bungalow on Kalawad Road with a lot of old wooden furniture?
Yes. We look at it first, because old Sankheda sets, carved beds and heavy almirahs decide the crew and the day count. Pieces built to come apart are dismantled, wrapped in blankets and corrugated sheet, and refitted at the new house. A full bungalow usually needs a packing day before the moving day.
Does Rajkot's afternoon break affect a move?
The loading carries on, but the city around it pauses. Society offices, hardware shops and the electrician you need for a light fitting may all be closed for a couple of hours after lunch.
