Shifting homes across Chhattisgarh
Chhattisgarh's cities cluster in its central plain. Raipur, the capital, is the business centre, with steel rolling mills and plants in the Urla and Siltara industrial areas, and the planned capital at Nava Raipur to its south-east, where the secretariat and many offices have moved. Bhilai and Durg, 25 to 40 km west, are twin cities built around the Bhilai Steel Plant. Bilaspur, to the north, has the High Court, the zonal railway headquarters and the head office of South Eastern Coalfields.
North and south of the plain the state is hilly and forested. Korba, north-east of Bilaspur, is power and coal country, with NTPC and state power stations, BALCO's aluminium smelter and the big open-cast mines at Gevra and Kusmunda. Surguja and Ambikapur lie further north. In the south, Bastar around Jagdalpur has the NMDC iron ore mines at Bacheli and Kirandul, reached through forest and the Keshkal ghat. Moves in the plains are city work, while moves to the mining and power towns are long drives into company colonies.
Much of the movement comes from transfers. SAIL, NTPC, SECL, NMDC, the railways and the state government shift staff between towns and out of the state, and BALCO, Jindal at Raigarh and the private steel and power plants bring in engineers and contractors on long postings. Students and faculty come for AIIMS, NIT and IIM in Raipur and IIT Bhilai. Families leaving the state tend to head for Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and Delhi.

Homes and buildings
Company townships make up a large part of the housing here. Bhilai's sectors of steel plant quarters, laid out along tree-lined roads, cover a wide area, and NTPC, BALCO and SECL have their own colonies in Korba and Bilaspur, as do the railways in Bilaspur. Raipur has independent houses in older areas such as Civil Lines, Shankar Nagar and Samta Colony, and new apartment towers and plotted colonies along VIP Road, at Kamal Vihar and towards Nava Raipur. Nava Raipur itself is wide roads, government housing and new blocks, with long distances between them.

Between cities
NH 53 runs west from Raipur through Durg and Rajnandgaon towards Nagpur, and east towards Sambalpur in Odisha, carrying much of the freight across the state. The Raipur-Bilaspur highway has been widened, and from Bilaspur the roads to Korba and Ambikapur climb into hillier country. South of Raipur, NH 30 runs through Dhamtari and Kanker to Jagdalpur, with the winding Keshkal ghat on the way. Coal and ore trucks crowd the roads around Korba, Raigarh and Bilaspur, and they are the slow part of most long drives in the state.

Moving into or out of Chhattisgarh
Household goods cross into Chhattisgarh from Maharashtra, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana or Jharkhand without any special permit. What travels with them is an itemised list and a signed declaration that they are used personal belongings, and an e-way bill does not normally apply to a house move. A car kept in the state beyond 12 months must be re-registered here, which needs an NOC from its old RTO, unless it carries BH plates. For company quarters, the handover is done with the township's estate office, and the gate may ask to see the pass before the truck goes in.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summers are harsh across the plains, with Raipur, Bilaspur and Korba touching 45°C or more in May, and the nights stay warm. The monsoon arrives in mid to late June and gives heavy rain until September, when roads in the forest districts and low bridges on smaller routes can flood. The cool season is dry and mild in the plains and colder in Surguja and Bastar. Bastar Dussehra, a festival that runs for 75 days and ends in October, brings crowds to Jagdalpur. November to February is the easiest period for a move.

How do I move out of a Bhilai Steel Plant quarter?
Start with the plant's town administration. Settle the electricity and water accounts, fix a date for the handover of the quarter and keys, and note any fittings that belong to the plant so they are not packed. The sectors have open roads, so the truck parks at the door. For a move the plant reimburses, the quote and GST invoice can be issued in the plant's name.
Is a move from Raipur to Nava Raipur a local move?
Yes. Nava Raipur is about 20 to 25 km from central Raipur, and a household move there fits into one day. The roads there are wide and quiet, so the truck reaches the building easily. Shops and services are still spread out, so keep the kitchen basics and bedding in cartons you can open first.
What should I know about moving to Korba?
Korba is a town of power plants, mines and company colonies, and heavy coal traffic slows the roads in and out, especially near Gevra and Kusmunda. Most colonies are gated, and security wants to know who is coming and which vehicle before the day. The heat from April to June is severe and fine coal dust gets everywhere, so electronics go into sealed cartons and loading starts early.
Will the monsoon hold up a move in Chhattisgarh?
On the main highways between Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur, rarely. The risk is on smaller roads and in the forest districts, where streams rise over low bridges after heavy rain and the Keshkal ghat can slow to a crawl. For a move to Bastar or the north between July and September, allow a spare day.
