Shifting homes across Maharashtra
The state is usually described in six regions, and a move feels different in each. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region, from Colaba out to Virar, Kalyan, Badlapur and Panvel, holds more people than many Indian states. Pune, the second city and our head office city, has spread into a belt of IT parks, car plants and colleges from Hinjewadi to Chakan. Beyond them lie the sugar and foundry towns of Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara, the Konkan coast from Alibaug to Sawantwadi, North Maharashtra around Nashik and Jalgaon, Marathwada around Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Latur and Nanded, and Vidarbha, which looks to Nagpur.
In Mumbai and Thane, the building shapes the move: a society slot, a small lift shared with residents, and a truck that can only use certain roads at certain hours. On the Konkan coast it is the lane down to the house and the rain. In Marathwada and Vidarbha homes are larger and further apart, a Nagpur bungalow can fill a 19 ft truck, and the drive from Chandrapur or Gondia to the Mumbai side runs past 800 km. Distances inside the state are easy to underestimate, since Gadchiroli is further from Mumbai than Goa is.
Work moves people around the state all year. Banks, shipping, film and head offices draw them to Mumbai, IT and engineering jobs to Hinjewadi and Nashik, car and bike plants to Chakan, Waluj and Shendra, and MIHAN and the government offices to Nagpur. Transfers are a steady part of it: state government staff, bank officers, railway employees and defence families, with cantonments at Deolali, Kamptee and Ahilyanagar. Students head for the colleges of the big cities each June, and many people retire to home towns in the Konkan and the sugar belt.

Before you move in Maharashtra

Homes and buildings
Mumbai has everything from chawls and old cessed buildings in the island city to towers of 40 storeys and more in Worli, Lower Parel and Thane. Redevelopment of old societies means many families move twice, out to a rented flat and back into the new building. Townships with service lifts ring the big cities, from Wakad and Kharadi to Kharghar and Ghodbunder Road. The old cores of Nashik, Kolhapur and Solapur still have wadas off narrow lanes. Nagpur and Amravati lean towards independent houses, and a Konkan home is often a tiled bungalow set back from the road behind mango and coconut trees.

Between cities
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway climbs the Bhor ghat and carries the heaviest traffic in the state. NH 48 continues south through Satara and Kolhapur, with the Khambatki ghat on the way, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg now links Nagpur with the edge of the Mumbai region through Marathwada in a long day's drive. The Mumbai-Nashik road climbs the Kasara ghat. The Konkan is the slow part of the map. The Mumbai-Goa highway, NH 66, has been under widening for years, and the Amba, Kumbharli and Varandha ghats that link the coast to the plateau are narrow, steep and prone to landslides in heavy rain.

Moving into or out of Maharashtra
A move between two Maharashtra cities crosses no state line, so there is nothing to declare at a border and your car keeps its MH number. Coming into the state or leaving it, used household goods are not a sale, and they travel on an itemised packing list with a signed declaration of personal effects in place of an e-way bill. A car that will stay in another state for more than 12 months has to be registered there, which starts with a no objection certificate from its Maharashtra RTO. Central and state government, defence, bank and PSU staff may qualify for a BH series plate, which avoids this on every transfer.

Weather and the months to plan around
The south-west monsoon usually arrives in early June and stays until September. Mumbai and the Konkan get very heavy rain, low-lying roads flood in Mumbai around Hindmata, Sion and the Andheri subway, and the ghats slow to a crawl. Marathwada and much of Vidarbha get far less rain, but Vidarbha's summer is among the hottest in India, with Nagpur and Chandrapur above 45°C in May. Ganeshotsav in August or September and the Ashadhi wari to Pandharpur in June or July close roads for days. November to February is the easiest stretch across the state.

Do I need to re-register my car if I move from one Maharashtra city to another?
No. The car stays on its MH registration anywhere in the state. You only need to get the new address recorded on the registration certificate at the RTO that covers your new home, which is a short application with proof of address. Re-registration applies when a car leaves Maharashtra for more than 12 months.
Should I avoid moving during Ganeshotsav?
Where the date is flexible, it is worth it. For the ten days of the festival, pandals take over lanes in Mumbai and the other big cities, and on the main immersion days whole routes to the sea, rivers and lakes are closed to traffic from the afternoon until the next morning. Packing can go ahead, but a truck may not reach your building. Plan the loading for a day well clear of the immersions.
Can I move to a house in the Konkan during the monsoon?
Yes, with extra care and a flexible date. Rain on the coast is heavy from June to September, ghat roads close for hours after a landslide, and many village lanes turn to mud. Furniture and mattresses get a breathable wrap under the outer film, loading is timed for breaks in the rain, and where the lane is soft the load is switched to a smaller vehicle for the final few hundred metres.
I am being transferred from Nagpur to Mumbai. What should I sort out first?
The Mumbai end. Find out the society's shifting hours, whether the lift has to be booked, and whether the society wants a letter from your landlord or a deposit. Tell your Nagpur landlord or quarters office the date of the move. If your employer is paying, have the quote and GST invoice raised in the company's name. At around 820 km, this is a long move, so book a week or two ahead.
